Abstract		Susceptibility of 102 isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes from Gorenjska region and 100 isolates of Sfreptococcus pneumoniae from different parts of Slovenia is shown. Isolates were collected from1999-2000 and tested with disc diffusion method and E-tests in 5% CO2 in microbiology laboratories in Slovenia and with agar dilution method in air and PCR in the Hershey Medical Center in the USA. S. pyogenes isolates tested were all susceptible to penicillin G, chloramphenicol and levofloxacin. Macrolide resistance was found in 13/102 isolates, all from throat samples. They had erm(A) (erm(TR)) genes, expressed an inducible type of resistance to macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B antibiotics (iMLSB phenotype) and were cross-resistant to tetracydine. All erm(A) S. pyogenes isolates were susceptible in vitro to clindamycin. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
