Abstract     Globalization and removing of borders between developed and developing countries urgently asks for an antibiotic resistance surveillance system and control of antibiotic use. Such a surveillance system permits quick identification of multiresistant bacteria that could spread and render the treatment of infections more difficult and much more expensive. Introduction of antibiotic resistance surveillance requires a lot of motivation, money and good will for cooperation in microbiological laboratories and with hospital infection control specialists and a good software program. Slovenian hospital bacteriologists are aware of the importance of antibiotic resistance surveillance. Therefore, they use international standards, introduce appropriate software programs, improve diagnostic equipment, participate in intemational projects and in extemal quality control.
