Abstract		In order to prevent spreading of multiresistant bacteria in the hospital environment, surveillance cultures from patients at risk of colonization are taken. The sensitivity of surveillance cultures depends on the number and combination of samples and sampling sites, on the identification methods and on the correct susceptibility testing. Each laboratory has to evaluate its own detection system as there are no gold standards, especially for selecting culture media.
