Abstract     Maribor Teaching Hospital is a regional hospital with about 1500 beds. For surveillance purposes, a laboratory register of patients with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was introduced, which is used by the members of the Infection Control Team in preparing infection control measures. In 1999, the incidence of patients newly colonized/infected with MRSA was 0.23 per 100 admissions an increase by 57% with respect to the previous year. After an analysis of the existing situation and implementation of infection control measures in the next year, a reduction of the incidence rate down to 0.14 patients per 100 admissions was achieved. The prevalence rate of patients with MRSA colonization/infection among all patients in whom S. aureus was found was reduced from 10% in the year 1999 to 6.4% in the year 2000. Fifty-three percent of new MRSA isolates in the year 2000 were detected in cultures from carriage sites (still during colonization), and the number of new and late MRSA isolates from wounds, pus, liquor, catheters and drains was decreased. The prevalence rate of MRSA bacteremia was reduced from 25% in the year 1999 to 16.6% in the year 2000.
