Abstract | Hundred and seventy-two bacterial strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) were isolated in patients hospitalized in the Clinical Centre Ljubljana in the year 2000. Hundred and forty-five (84.3%) out of 172 ESBL-positive strains were found to be Klebsiella spp., 23 (13.4%) Escherichia coli, 2 (1.1 %) Proteus mirabilis, 1 (0.6%) Enterobacter cloacae and 1 (0.6%) Morganella morganii. The prevalence of ESBL producers among Klebsiella spp. isolates was 15.3%. All ESBLproducing Klebsiella spp. strains were sensitive to imipenem, but mostly multiresistant to the majority of other antibiotic agents still available for the treatment of infections caused by ESBL producers. | |
