Abstract     The chronological development of pre-hospital emergency medical services in Slovenia is described. The basic idea to provide immediate medical help to patients with life-threatening medical conditions and injuries has been formed well before 1974. The aim was to develop office-based and ambulatory health care service to provide emergency medical services at the site of the life-threatening event. First, the experience in organizing emergency medical services in the Kranj area from 1969 to 1978 is presented. Then, the development of general emergency medical services in Ljubljana is reviewed. Instead of being at the end of the survival chain, the general practitioner was transferred to its starting point, re-claiming his role as an ambulatory doctor.
