Abstract     New guidelines for neonatal resuscitation emphasise: a) that personnel capable of initiating resuscitation should attend every delivery, b) need for suctioning of hypopharynx after delivery of the head if meconium is observed, and direct tracheal custioning if respiration is depressed, c) the establishment of adequate ventilation as primary concern, d) initiation of chest compression if heart rate remains < 60 bpm despite adequate ventilation (coordination chest compression with ventilation at ratio 3:1 with a common rate 120 events /min.), and e) need for epinephrine administration if heart rate remains < 60 bpm despite 30 sec. of effective assisted ventilation and circulation (chest compression). They caution against hyperthermia during resuscitation, recommend use of 100% oxygen if assisted ventilation is required, support two thumb-encircling hand technique for chest compression and warn upon alburnin-containing solution for volume expansion.
