Abstract     Patients with atrial fibrillation lasting more than 48 hours and undergoing cardioversion are at increased risk of cardioembolic stroke and require anticoagulation. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) provides an alternative approach in the management of such patients. Cardioversion with brief anticoagulation is possible after exluding thrombus and spontaneous echocardiographic contrast (SEC) in the atria. We report about 16 patients from our practice. The patients were divided into two groups: group A- immediate cardioversion with brief anticoagulation and group B-conventional warfarin treatment before cardioversion. TEE has the potential to further risk stratify patients with AF.
