Abstract     Negative-pressure pulmonary oedema (NPPE) is seen in upper airway obstruction. The prognosis is excellent with prompt recognition and appropriate treatment. 60-year old women was admitted because of NPPE due to tracheal stenosis caused by external compression of dilated oesophagus. Oesophagus was dilated because of the benign narrowing, 35 cm from the mouth. The piece of wedged meat in the oesophagus was the cause of the acute event. Pathophysiologic mechanisms of NPPE are discussed.
