Abstract     Chloroform (trichloromethane) poisoning is rare since it is no longer used in medicine. Headache, nausea, vomiting and confusion clinically present chloroform poisoning by inhalation or ingestion. More severe exposures may cause coma, respiratory arrest and ventricular arrhythmias. Hepatic and renal injury may be apparent 24 - 72 hours after exposure. We present a case of a 21 - year-old woman, who attempted suicide with inhalation of chloroform; while ingestion of a small amount could not be excluded. On admission she was unconscious, she had sinus tachycardia and respiratory insufficiency. The laboratory evaluation revealed hepatotoxicity. She required assisted ventilation for a few hours. Treatment with N-acetylcysteine had to be interrupted due to an allergic reaction and continued by symptomatic therapy only. She developed severe, but fortunately reversible, liver damage. On discharge, two weeks post exposure, her liver transaminases were only mildly raised. Follow-up revealed that she had completely recovered three mounts later.
