Abstract | Hip fracture is one of the most frequent injury in the elderly: This fracture is characteristic for an osteopenic bone and is caused by low energy trauma. With younger patients it is rare and is caused by high energy trauma. "Hip fracture" means fracture of the femoral neck or trochanteric region. Both types are approx. equally frequent, but with different prognosis. Femoral neck fractures compromise the blood supply of the femoral head, therefore delayed union, pseudarthrosis or femoral head osteonecrosis are frequent complications. In this way they differ from the trochanteric fractures; that have excellent blood supply in the region and consequently heal soundly and with low complication rate. All hip fractures are treated surgically. Femoral neck fractures either with endoprothesis or open reduction and internal fixation, differing from trochanteric fractures, being always treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The procedure is performed after thorough medical cheeking of the patient. Due to the rising incidence of these injuries, the preventive means are increasingly important. | |
