Abstract     Airway suctioning is a component of oral, nasal, or bronchial hygiene therapy and involves mechanical aspiration of accumolated secretions, blood, vomitus, and other foreign materials, that cannot be removed by patient's spontaneous cought or other less invasive procedures. The clearance of secretions is accomlished with different suctions machines by application of subatmospheric pressure. The procedure includes patient preparation, the suction event and follow up care. In preparation for the suctioning event, the patient should receive hyperoxigenation by delivery of 100% oxygen prior to the suctioning event. Sterile technique should be employed. The duration of each suctioning event should be approximately 10 -15 secund. The patient should be monitored for adverse reactions. After event all equipment and supplies should be appropriately disposed of or disinfected. The aim of the procedures is removing of secretions and better breathing.
