Abstract     Chlamydiae are among the most widespread bacteriel pathogens in the world. They are obligate intracellular bacteria that grow in eukariotic cells and cause a wide spectrum of human disease or may be asimptomatic. Chlamydiae infect epithelial cells at mucosal surfaaces. Infection is characterized by inflamation which is exacerbaated upon reinfection or reactivation of a persistent infection. The reccurent inflammation leads to tissue damage and scarring. The cytokine profile is probably a critical event for the initiation of the immune response and the eventual outcome of the infection and disease.
