Abstract     Background. With this research we wished to establish the extension of asymptomatic chlamydial infections among young men and find out basic characteristics in their sexual behavior with the help of a questionnaire. We established the infection with the help of PCR tests of urine samples. Examinees and methods. A group of 1025 young men, between 18 and 21(the average age 19,8 years), entering the army service, were included in the cross sectional study. While visiting the epidemiologic ward surgery for vaccination for tick borne meningoencephalitis, the examinees first catch of urine was taken into sterile dishes and they filled in a short questionnaire about their sexual behavior. Conditions for entering a research. Healthy young men, with no problems concerning urethritis and no therapy with antibiotics in the last 14 days. Collected urine samples were frozen and sent to lagreb for CT infection testing with the help of the PCR test. Examinees who were proven infected were treated with I gram of azithromycin (Sumamed). Results. 1025 young men who filled in 987 questionnaires about their sexual behavior (96,2% of the examinees) were included in the research. Of all examinees who filled in the questionnaire, the average age at their first sexual intercourse was 16,6 years; the average age of their sexual partners was 11,1 years. 759 (11%) of the examinees used protection at their first sexual intercourse; 67% of those, or 666 examinees, used a condom. We established asymptomatic chlamydial infection in 21 examinees, or 2%. The average age of the infected examinees was 19,7 years. All of them were prescribed the therapeutic doses of azithromycin. The effectiveness of the therapy was not checked again by taking another urine sample. In the group of asymptomatic infected examinees, the average age of the first sexual intercourse was 16,2 years; the average age of their sexual partners was 16,1 years.
