Abstract     The traditional approach to laboratory diagnostic testing for Chlamydia infections has consisted of cell culture of inocula prepared from clinical speciments. Antigen and nucleic acid detection technologies were developed during the 1980s and have found widespread application in diagnosis. Most recently, nucleic acid amplification technologies have been developed, and application of these tests has taught us that previous methods are not as sensitive and that the prevalence of Chlamydia infection is higher in most populations than were previously believed. The developments of tests based on nucleic aeid amplification technology have been most important advance in the field of Chlamydia diagnosis. These tests are in routine use in many laboratories yet, and it is believed that in the near future nudeic acid amplification based tests will replace traditional ways of testing in laboratories all around the world.
