Abstract     Consequences of infection with C. trachomatis impose a significant burden on humans globally. Ocular trachoma is considered the most common cause of patentially preventable blindness. Sexually transmitted genital tract infections are even more prevalent and have as major complications infertility and many other clinical syndromes. The mechanisms by which C. trachomatis induces inflammation, tissue destruction and immense scarring are only partially understood, autoimmune pathogenesis of host versus bacterial antigen beeing involved. This review focuses on the most common complications of C. trachomatis infection worldwide and in endemic areas. In the era of succesfull controlling of acute chlamydial infections by sophisticated diagnostic tools and antimicrobials, the ignorance of possible complications of chlamydial infections is not permissible.
