Abstract     Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis infections in the newborn are presented. Chlamydia trachomatic is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted microorganisms. The infant born to a woman with chlamydial cervical infection is at 50% to 70% risk of acquiring the infection during passage through the birth canal, which may usually manifest as conjunctivitis and/or pneumonia. Although usually mild, such pneumonia may have a protracted and more complicated course, if it is not treated adequately. Microbiological diagnosis can be difficult and several non culture methods are now available. Treatment is mainly macrolide based with erythromycin. Some our experience with chlamydial infection in the newborn are discussed at the end.
