Abstract     The recommended treatment regimens for chlamydial infections are doxycycline or azithromycin with comparable bacteriological and clinical cure rates. For chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory diseases, perihepatitis, proctitis and epididymitis is a 7-day course with doxycycline or a single-dose treatment with azithromycin adequate. For chlamydial prostatitis, reactive arthritis and respiratory infections the treatment with doxycycline is usually prolonged to 10-14 days. It is not uncommon to require a second course of therapy, if the clinical response is slow. Newer quinolones have a good in vitro activity against chlamydial infections, but larger clinical studies are still missing.
