Abstract | The recommended treatment regimens for chlamydial infections are doxycycline or azithromycin with comparable bacteriological and clinical cure rates. For chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory diseases, perihepatitis, proctitis and epididymitis is a 7-day course with doxycycline or a single-dose treatment with azithromycin adequate. For chlamydial prostatitis, reactive arthritis and respiratory infections the treatment with doxycycline is usually prolonged to 10-14 days. It is not uncommon to require a second course of therapy, if the clinical response is slow. Newer quinolones have a good in vitro activity against chlamydial infections, but larger clinical studies are still missing. | |
