Abstract     The purpose of this research was to investigate the development of treatment of Diabetes Mellitus in hospital of Slovenj Gradec between years 1925 and 1960. We examined primary sources that are preserved and available in the archives and enriched them with verbal sources. Diabetes Mellitus is treated from historical, statistical and social point of view. We made comparison with the present time and put directives for the future. Diabetes Mellitus is a state of chronical hyperglycaemia that originates from a lack of insulin of from resistance to its action. It was in 1923 that insulin was used for treatment of Diabetes Mellitus for the first time. In Slovenj Gradec that happend in 1927. The year of 1955 is the birthday of oral antidiabetics. In Slovenj Gradec they were used in 1957 for the first time (they were called Tolbusal). The number of pacients diabetics was increasing through years, more and more people got ill at old age. While the time of hospitalisation was getting shorter, the number of implications of Diabetes Mellitus was getting larger. The diabetics were abandoned by society; vital importance of their illness was experienced the lack of attention. Many diabetics did not take their illness serious enough, they did not obey the orders from their doctors and they caused many unnecessary implications. At present day the efforts of scientists are pointed mostly at early diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus. A lot is expected from screening. The method is based on determination of glucosis in blood in risk populations. Genetic researches represent another great opportunity in healing of Diabetes Mellitus. We lernt from past ages that Diabetes Mellitus is a problem of a whole society. Therefore its treatment should be taken seriously.
