Abstract     Background. In the last decade the number of medical examinations following car accidents resulting in whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) has significantly increased due to a massive supply of most diverse accident insurance products. By the year 1989, such injuries were rare in traumatological clinics. Since then, however, WAD cases have been treated by family doctors, traumatologists, orthopaedists and physiatrists. The treatment performed by such a diverse range of specialists has resulted in opposing views about the WAD treatment choice. The Slovene Association of Traumatologists and the SZD Orthopaedic Association outlined in 1997, at the 1st Celje Days with international participation, ten guidelines and defined the sequence of stage diagnostics. Methods. To assess WAD injuries three most established classifications are used in the world. These classifications dictate the therapy and the anticipated duration of treatment. I will analyse more in detail the classification of injuries by Erdman, Encenzberg and the classification according to the Quebec Task Force. In practice, the above classifications are rarely used in preparing medical examination results or expert opinions. The use of any of these classifications and a precise assessment of the injury severity would clarify many ambiguities at the very beginning of the injury assessment. Results. The treatment outcomes depend on careful general history, history of the trauma and a special history of the accident dynamics, including technical aspects of the collision and protection, which requires a team approach and a co-0peration with traffic expert, forensic expert, neurophysiologist, physiatrist etc. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
