Abstract     The paper presents a psychological analysis of statistics on road safety in the area of the Celje Police Administration in the period from 1996 to 1999. The findings obtained through this analysis show that among the primary causes of road accidents the most common were those in which it can be assumed that subjective factors played a part. These findings coincide with the results of research and data from the literature which describe the prevailing causes of road accidents as human factors, attributing more than nine tenths of road accidents to subjective factors. The facts presented lead to the conclusion that a greater and more decisive emphasis should be placed on the psychological characteristics of candidate drivers. The document therefore presents the need for compulsory psychological examinations of all candy date drivers of B-category vehicles. Psychological science has methods and procedures which enable an efficient insight into the dynamics of a person's personality. Applied in the examination of potential drivers, it can identify those individuals who, in terms of psychological characteristics, may not expected to perform adequately in the road traffic environment.
