Abstract     Medicinal plants and derived products have a long history and tradition in Europe. This is why the common opinion on natural drugs is: "They may help me and they cannot hurt me." Such reasoning is the cause of a significant increase in the use of over-the-counter products, among which medicines of herbal origin have a special place. They play an important role in modern medicine despite the predominance of synthetic substances. Phytomedicine does not involve only "home made drugs", it is an internationally established and recognised branch of medicine. As consumption and market share of herbal medicines increase, the scientific community also sees a greater need to regulate this area. There was much activity recently in the European Union in the area of regulation and evaluation of herbal medicines. European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicines (EMEA), European Scientific Cooperation On Phytotherapy (ESCOP) and European Pharmacopoeia actively participate in this project.
