Abstract     Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be applied onto different organs and body parts, also serving as the external control of paralyzed or paretic extremities. It is applicable in patients with central nervous lesions and preserved excitability of motor units. The FES method is used for the locomotor training in selected patients with cerebral and also spinal cord lesions. Those patients reacting well to FES can avail themselves of an FES system to be used as an orthotic electronic aid on a daily basis.
