Abstract     Asbestors has been in widespread use for the production of numerous, products for more than a century. The majority of asbestos in Slovenia was used in the production of asbestoscement products by Salonit Anhovo factory. Asbestos fibres, after they have been inhaled, cause fibrotic and malignant health effects. Occupational diseases that can result from occupational asbestos exposure are asbestosis, pleural changes, cancer of the respiratory tract and malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum. The biological effects of asbestos, the characteristics of occupational cancer due to asbestos exposure legislation on recognizing occupational cancer are presented. Available data about occupational cancer in Slovenia are presented as well as more precise analysis of the data on 12 recognized cases of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura in workers or retired workers of the Salonit Anhovo factory.
