Abstract     Two higher plants live in hidden and dark rocky shelves or in deep Balkan mountain gorges that in a special way are able to withstand drought. They are the endemites Ramonda serbica and R. nathaliae which survive by becoming almost completely inactive. The once beautiful and lush leaves curl up and almost dry out. To the unknowing, they are dead, never again to flower. But this is an illusion: given adequate water a "miracle" occurs and they resurrect. The authors are studying the influence of dehydration and rehydration on the enzymes that cleave proteins.
