Abstract | Reactive oxygen species and free radicals occur in biological systems as consequence of normal tissue metabolism. They can damage cell constituents: lipids, DNA, proteins, and carbohydrates. The article specifies most common radicals and reactive oxygen species, their effect on the key cell components; and gives an overview on possibilities that a cell has to prevent or repair its damage, caused by radicals. Defence against free radicals includes a system of enzymatic protection (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidases), small endogenous molecules like glutathione, uric acid, coenzyme Q, bilirubin; and various natural antioxidants like: vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, plant phenolic and sulphuric compounds. | |
Summary | Radikali in reaktivne kisikove zvrsti, ki se pojavljajo v bioloških sistemih kot posledica normalnega metabolizma, lahko hudo poškodujejo celične sestavine: lipide, DNK, proteine in ogljikove hidrate. V članku je podan pregled najpogostejših radikalov in reaktivnih kisikovih zvrsti, njihovih učinkov na ključne sestavine celic ter pregled možnosti, ki jih ima celica za obrambo oziroma za odstranitev poškodb, ki jih radikali povzročajo. Obrambni mehanizmi vključujejo obrambo z encimi (superoksid dismutaza, katalaza in peroksidaze), majhnimi endogenimi molekulami, kot so: glutation, sečna kislina, koencim Q in bilirubin, ter številnimi naravnimi antioksidanti: vitamin E, vitamin C, (beta-karoten, rastlinske fenolne in žveplove spojine. | |
