Abstract		Following the example of the Yugoslav Association for Infectious Diseases, which was established a year earlier in Belgrade, the Section for Infectious Diseases at the Slovenian Medical Association was established on 30 September 1961 at Celje with the aim to unite formally and professionally all the doctors practicing at different departments for infectious diseases in Slovenia. Workshops, symposia and congresses have promoted the exchange of experiences and knowledge about new achievements in infectology. Section meetings inspired lively discussions on various organizational issues, and doctrines in dif ferent fields of clinical infectology were formed and implemented rationally and effectively. The Extended Professional Board for Infectology, consisting the experts from the University Department and heads of the wards, was established in 1980. Since then the Board has been in change of forming the doctrines in infectology, while the Society for Infectious Diseases has been helping to maintain the professional level of Slovenian infectology. In May 1997 the Section for Infectious Diseases was renamed and thus became the Society for Infectious Diseases at the Slovenian Medical Association. This report gives a detailed overview of the main activities of the Section for Infectious Diseases respectively the Society for Infectious Diseases at the Slovenian Medical Association in the 40-year period of their existence.
