Abstract     The epidemics of jaundice, caused by hepatitis A virus, occurred frequently during previous centuries. In the developed world the number of cases diminished with better sanitary conditions. Hepatitis A is a notifiable communicable disease in Slovenia. According to the data available, from year 1970 to year 2000, two major epidemics were observed: in years 1971/72 and years 1975/76. The incidence rate has been decreasing gradually since the last epidemic on. The highest incidence rate of hepatitis A was observed in 1976 (141/100.000 inhabitants), and the lowest in the previous year (1.9/100.000 inhabitants). The disease is slightly more prevalent in men than in women. The number of reported cases is the highest in early autumn and during the winter. After year 1990, 62.3 % of reported cases were hospitalized. In the last twenty year period 3 patients have died from acute hepatitis A infection. In the year 1999, 328 travellers were tested for the presence of anti HAV antibodies. The serum was collected only in travellers who had not suffered from acute hepatitis A or had not been vaccinated. The majority of travellers born before 1942 were tested positive, but very few of those born after 1972 had anti-HAV antibodies.
