Abstract     Hepatitis B is one of the most common infectious diseases in the world. Transmission of hepatitis B virus can be effectively prevented by vaccination. Injection drug users are at high risk for infection with hepatitis B virus. Transmission is primarily parenteral through sharing of a contaminated injection equipment. Multiple studies report that 19-99% of injection drug users have serologic evidence of prior infection with hepatitis B virus. The seroprevalence for hepatitis B virus among injection drug users from Maribor region is 26%. A relatively high proportion of injection drug users from Maribor (74%) are still susceptible to hepatitis B virus infection.
