Abstract     Treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C using interferon alpha monotherapy has been efficient in 10-20% only. We have therefore compared the efficacy and safety between interferon alpha monotherapy and interferon alpha plus ribavirin combination therapy. There were 143 patients with chronic hepatitis C enrolled in the study: 80 patients were treated with interferon alpha for 18 months and 63 patients received combination treatment for 12 months. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated by serum alanine aminotransferase level and serum viral load. A complete response to 18-month monotherapy treatment with interferon alpha vas achieved in 49%; only 28% responded completely after 3-month follow-up. In-patients receiving a 12-month combination treatment a complete response was present in 55%, decreasing to 43% after 6-month follow up. Side effects were more often present in the combination therapy group. Treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C using interferon alpha and ribavirin combination therapy is more efficient than treatment with interferon alpha monotherapy.
