Abstract     Infection with hepatitis C virus causes rather characteristic although not specific liver lesions. The aim of this review is to describe the variety and type of liver alterations in the infected patients. During the last five years, we investigated histopathological changes in 197 liver biopsies obtained from 190 patients. In all patients chronic hepatitis was diagnosed histomorphologically, accompanied with histological signs of acute inflammatory exacerbation in three cases. Portal lymphocytic aggregates sometimes comprising germinal centres, acinar focal inflammation, apoptoses and diffuse sinusoidal infiltration by lymphocytes, so as interface hepatitis, were characteristic histomorphological features of chronic hepatitis C. Steatosis was frequently present also. Since individual hepatotropic viruses show similar pathology, the exact aetiological diagnosis cannot be made without relevant clinical, serological and/or virological data.
