Abstract     The studying efficiency of the students of medicine during their first three years of studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana was related to their success at the Matura examination. The population of students, enrolled in 1997 was examined. The effect of the students' choice among the natural sciences Matura subjects was focused on. The studying efficiency of the students who chose two natural sciences Matura subjects was compared to the studying efficiency of the students who took a single natural sciences Matura subject. In both groups we could divide the students into those regularly studying, and the students who are behind with their studying obligations and also have on the average lower grades. The regular students of both groups are approximately equally successful, except that in the first year the average grade of the students who had two natural sciences Matura subjects is much higher. Among the students who are behind the studying schedule there are relatively more from the group who had only one natural sciences Matura subject. Next, the relation between the choice of the natural sciences Matura subject and the success at the corresponding natural sciences subject in the first year of medicine was examined. The results indicate why there are among the students of medicine such differences in their previously acquired knowledge of the natural sciences.
