Abstract     Toothmouse is a dental prevention programme for children, which was developed with the assistance of experts for pre-school education and forms part of the health education curriculum in Slovene kindergartens. The programme has been used for four years, along with other well-established activities and measures, such as mouth rinsing after meals, regular cleaning of teeth, weekly brushing with fluoride gel, and tooth-friendly nutrition with the omission of sweets and replacement of sweet drinks by water. The programme comprises a booklet entitled Toothmouse, didactic games, puzzles and a videocassette. These aids can be used in different ways to teach and motivate the pre-school child. Two hundred parents of children from two kindergartens were asked to complete a questionnaire, inquiring about their opinion on the programme and in particular on the booklet. Eighty-four per cent of the respondents (80 %) felt that the booklet contributed to a more relaxed atmosphere in the dental office, and that the children were less afraid of visiting the dentist. None of the respondents expressed a negative attitude to the programme.
