Abstract		The transportation of non-indigenous marine organisms in the ballast waters of cargo vessels has been practised for almost a century, but only began to attract considerable world-wide interest a few decades ago. This increased interest is linked primarily to the negative consequences on impacted ecosystems caused by harmful species in a new environment and on human health, with special emphasis on non-indigenous toxic dinoflagellates. Although toxic dinoflagellates and cases of human intoxication caused by these species are common in Slovenian coastal waters, Slovenian legislation relating to the management of ballast water has not given due consideration to this problem.
Summary		Razširjanje tujerodnih vrst morskih organizmov z balastnimi vodami tovornih ladij širom po svetu je že stoletje znan pojav, vendar je šele v zadnjih desetletjih vzbudil povečano zanimanje v javnosti. Žal je ta medijska odmevnost povezana z negativnimi posledicami, ki jih vnos tujerodnih vrst povzroči v nekem okolju in se odražajo tako na porušenem ekosistemu kot na človekovem zdravju. Posebno pozornost zasluži vnos škodljivih vrst rastlinskega planktona, zlasti dinoflagelatov. Strupene fitoplanktonske vrste in zastrupitve, ki jih te vrste povzročajo pri teh ljudeh, najdemo tudi v našem obalnem morju, vendar obstoječa slovenska zakonodaja o upravljanju z balastnimi vodami tega nadvse pomembnega vprašanja ne obravnava.
