Abstract     In the study the author is using two methods for evaluating social and economic burden of premature mortality. The first method is calculation of years of potential life lost-YPLL before age 65 that emphasises deaths among younger age groups. The second method, Valued years of potential life lost-VYPLL, addresses lost economic productivity using the "Investment-Producer-Consumer" model. Potential loss is expressed as positive or negative values of the number of VYPLL. The study examined premature mortality in Slovenia in 1998. Deaths before the age 65 are classified as premature deaths and there were 24,6% of premature deaths in Slovenia in 1998. Number of YPLL per 1000 inhabitants under age 65 was 46. The rate was the highest in age groups 45-47 and 50-54. The difference between mean and women was the largest in age groups 5-9 and 30-34. Number of VYPLL was-569 per 1000 inhabitants under age 65. The difference between men and women in potential lost to society was the largest in age group 20-24. The difference in gain to society between men and women was nearly the same in all age groups and was 140% for men in comparison to women. Negative values mean gain to society. As can be seen from the calculations, the worst case of social and economic loss is death at age 20 (after full investment, but before any productivity) and best at age 65 (after maximum productivity, but before entering consumerism stage).
