Abstract     Following the pyramid approach to cognitive neuroscience, we review the findings about the role of appraisal processes in generating emotion. Presented and discussed are studies in cognitive psychology, computational modelling, neuroscience and cognitive neuropsychology. It is demonstrated that integrative features of the pyramid approach to cognitive neuroscience can produce synergetic effects in investigation of appraisal processes. Also, these processes have been found to have considerable support in the research of cognition and emotion. Models that incorporate multiple levels of appraisal, such as Leventhal and Scherers model (1987), seem to be the most plausible.
