Abstract     Operations of the thyroid glands are the most frequent neck operations. These operations have an important position in curative treatment of the benign thyroid glands diseases. It can repeatedly happen, that after operating the goitre, the malignant lesion id detected, therefore it is difficult to draw a clear boundary, and the surgical techniques between the two are also not differentiated. The thyroid gland can be operated by a surgeon who is well acquainted with the physiology of the thyroid gland and the anatomy of the neck. He indicates the operation together with a thyrologist. During the operation the surgeon must have the possibility of making the histological tissue examination, and in the case of the carcinoma, he must be able to make the appropriate resection. After the operation, several years of observing the patient is indispensible and persistent searching for possible post operative complications e.g. lesions of the neck nerves, hypothyroidism, recurrence of hyperthyroidism and nodular goitre. When post operative complications are too frequent, a surgical technique should be improved or changed or being let to the more qualified surgeon.
