Abstract		During the last 25 years over 2500 tracheotomies in ENT clinic and units of intensive care of University clinical centre Ljubljana were performed. Complications arose in less than 2 percent of the cases treated. Only a few of urgent cricothyroidotomies (conicotomies) were performed. Tracheotomy is the treatment most commonly used by an ENT specialist. No reports about urgent cricothyroidotomies performed at other Slovene departments have been found. It is our opinion that every physician should be able to perform a conicotomy contrary to tracheotomy which can be a dangerous operation in inexperienced hands. Indications concerns, risks, benefits and tehnical considerations are briefly revied.
