Abstract     Fibre density (FD) provides an insight into the internal architecture of the motor unit, but does not give a measure of the total number of the muscle fibres in a muscle. In neurogenic conditions, it offers an early and sensitive index of reinnervation. in myopathies, increased FD reflects fibre splitting and non-uniform fibre atrophy, but other mechanisms are possible. Mean interspike interval is a sensitive measure of fibre size variation and can be an early neurophysiological sign of myopathy.
