Abstract     Radiographic cephalometry is an important part of the morphologic diagnosis in orthodontics. The size, the shape and the relationships among the craniofacial structures can be assessed by the cephalometrics. The goal is to compare the patient to a normal reference group, so that differences between the patient's actual dentofacial relationship and those expected for his or her racial or ethnic group are revealed. The malocclusion can be classified and its severity is evaluated. There have been quite good normal values for the adult population established, but the certain standards for the period of the growth and development are missing. The majority of the standard values for the childhood and young adulthood are made according to the chronological age. But the decision when and how to start the orthodontic treatment is influenced more by dental then by chronological age. The dental age better reflects a developmental stage of the craniofacial complex then the chronological age. Like the other developmental ages, dental age correlates with the chronological age - but the correlation for dental age is one of the weakest. The period of the early mixed dentition is a very important developmental stage. At this time the relationship of the first permanent molars and permanent incisors are developed and the abnormal variations in the development can occur and malocclusion can be expressed. The vary certain standards of cephalometric measurements should be available for this developmental stage. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characted)
