Abstract | Patients with diabetes mellitus have a damage of the sympathetic nerves which innervate cranial base arteries. Therefore, these patients have disturbed regulation of the blood flow in the middle cerebral arteries. It has been found that during cold pressor test stimulation the constriction potential in groups of diabetics with autonomous neuropathy is significantly lower than in healthy population. Therefore, it can be concluded that diabetics have less efficient cerebrovascular reactivity and thus also a narrower area of effective cerebral autoregulation activity. This fact may contribute to an increased risk of cerebral ischemia.
