Abstract     The effect of sympathetic exclusion on vasospasm was studied in 29 New Zealand rabbits under conditions similar to human subarachnoid hemorrhage divided into four protocol groups: l . Group A: five rabbits without SAH; which served as the control group for comparing morphologic changes in the vessel walls. 2. Group B: Eight rabbits with only experimental SAH: 3. Group C: Nine rabbits in which, immediately after experimental SAH, peroral administration of the alpha-blocking agent phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride (PBZ) at a dose of 6 mg/kg BW daily was initiated Š7, 8Ć. 4. Group D Seven rabbits in which, immediately after experimental SAH, a bilateral upper cervical postganglionic sympathectomy was performed. The anesthetic ketamine hydrochloride (Ketamin 10%, Veyx-Pharma GmbH, Schwarzenborn, BRD) 50 mg/kg BW administered IM was used for general anesthesia (12). Changes in the basilar arteries of rabbits were evaluated by computer image analysis (KS 300 by Kontron Electronik), using histologic preparations of vessel walls obtained by the method of intracardial perfusion fixation (on 8th day) and stained by the H.E. method. A new measuring procedure was developed to assess changes in intimal corrugation per unit of measured vessel wall length in the form of the corrugation coefficient (CC). For each rabbit the mean value of measurements was calculated from slices of BA cut at three locations (upper, middle and inferior third of BA). CC is the coefficient between the length of intimal corrugations measured by computer image analysis and the length of the vessel section on which the measurements of corrugation length were carried out.
