Abstract     Background. We described maternal serum markers for antenatal Down's syndrome (DS) screening. The second trimester triple test (TT) in Slovenia was evaluated. Material and methods. The screening results of 3565 maternal serum samples, obtained between 1996 and 2000, were analysed. Results. The annual number of women opting for the triple test continues to grow. In 5year period 3.9% of pregnant women were screened. The detection rate was 100% for 8.8% false positive rate. We found 6 (13.3%) of 45 prenatally identified DS cases in the same period. Conclusions. The second trimester triple test is effective and safe, but number of attenders is still to small. We have no data about prenatal screening for DS in the first trimester with combination of fetal nuhal translucency and maternal serum markers in Slovenia yet.
