Abstract | Pain intensity studies show that labour pain ranks near the top of the list of painful experiences. Considering the intensity and prevalence of labour pain there is surprisingly little solid research evidence on its mechanisms. The present paper offers a brief review of recent findings on major components of labour pain. It deals primarily with the visceral pain caused by uterine constractions (key elements of visceral labour pain being ischaemia and inflammation) and somatic pain caused by the stretching of the structures of the lower birth canal. | |
