Abstract     Complete edentulism is a feature of the elderly population. It Initially causes problems associated with the absence of natural teeth. The consequence of edentulism is progressive atrophy of the jaw bone, which finally represents an additional prosthetic problem. At present, these problems are successfully overcome with the use of osseointegrated titanium implants. In this way bone resorption is reduced and better retention and stability of the prosthesis are achieved. Because of anatomical differences between the jaws, different surgical and prosthetic techniques are used in conjunction with implant placement in the upper and the lower jaws. We present our experience with progressive thread design dental implants, inserted in the edentulous lower jaws of 26 patients for the retention of total prostheses, and in the edentulous upper jaws of five patients to provide retention for a total prosthesis or a fixed prosthetic appliance. Complications have been rare, the early success rate being 100%. Good late results are anticipated especially in the lower jaws, which agrees with the experiences of other authors.
