Abstract     Osseointegrated dental implants have opened new possibilities for the prosthetic management of totally or partly edentulous patients. Several factors determine the long-term success of an implant. The status of implants in the oral cavity must be followed by the surgeon, while follow-up care of the superstructure is the responsibility of the prosthodontist or the dentist. The article presents a protocol for long-term observation of patients with dental implants, based on Ryges method as modified by Pieper in 1988. The parameters to be followed include: probing depth, level of epithelial attachment, X-ray appearance, PI, GI, implant mobility, occlusion, presence of pathogenic bacteria, physical characteristics of the implant and superstructure, osteoporosis and the patients opinion and attitude. A carefully completed protocol is an indispensable tool for long-term follow-up of patients with dental implants.
