Abstract     Background. Two strains of laboratory rat are commonly used in the research of experimentaly induced intestinal cancer with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH): Wistar and Fischer. Not much research work has been done about the role of strain in the incidence and distribution of tumors which developed. Aim. The purpose of our research was to evaluate and compare the influence of strain on exsperimental induction of intestinal tumors with DMH in male Wistar and Fischer rats. Hypothesis. According to data in literature we expect a greater number of the epithelial intestinal tumors in Fischer than in Wistar strain of rats. Methods. 29 Fischer and 30 Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously with injections of DMH weekly at a dosage 25 mg/kg body weight for 20 weeks. After 25 weeks from the beginning of the experiment, the animals were sacrified and autopsied. All macroscopical lesions were histologicaly evaluated. The complete colon was examined and all microscopical changes evaluated.. Results. Induction of intestinal tumors succeded in 97% of Fischer rats and 100% of Wistar rats. In Wistar rats 184 tumors were found: 133 adenomas, 50 tubular adenocarcinomas and 1 signet-ring cell carcinoma. In transversal and descending colon 77% of the malignant tumors were found and 23% in the small intestine. In Fischer rats 126 tumors were found: 94 adenomas, 26 tubular adenocarcinomas, 5 signet-ring cell carcinomas and 1 mucinous carcinoma. 58% of the malignant tumors were induced in small bowel and 42% in the large bowel. The strain difference in the incidence of all induced tumors was statisticaly significant (P=0,001). The difference in the occurrence of the malignant and benign tumors was also significant (P<0,001; P=0,011). Extraintestinal tumors were not found. Conclusions.
