Abstract     The enormous therapeutic potential of second generation antipsychotics as well as of their major influence on the practice of psychiatry in many countries has been addressed in various documents. Examples are the recent draft of the "Consensus Statement on the Usefulness and Use of Second Generation Antipsychotic Medicatiori' of the World Psychiatric Association and the document on "The Role of Second Generation Antipsychotics in the Management of Acute Psychotic Disorders" created for a regional "Program for the Improvement of Care for People with Schizophrenia". Data on new formulations of atypical antipsychotics such as the im. formulation of olanzapine support the use of more effective and safe treatment with atypical antipsychotics in acutely agitated patients.
