Abstract     The article gives an overwiev of modern trends and basic concepts of management of biodegradable waste in the European Union member states. The overwiev is based on the statistical data and working documents on biodegradable waste management strategy as well as publication on succesful projects of separate collection and composting of this type of waste, which were prepared by the European Commission - Directorat - General for the Environment. The most important aspects of the successful management of biodegradable waste are presented in the conclusions which are based on the results arising from different European projects. These aspects are: stringent implementation of separate waste collection at the source, choice of a model, which is adjusted to the local needs and active participation of all stakeholders in the waste management process.
