Abstract     The authors have evaluated the prevalence of dental caries in 1794 children between 6 and 18 months of age, seen over a period of 11 years. Carious lesions occurred in children who were never breastfed as well as in those who were breastfed for normal and extended periods of time. Similarly, completely healthy teeth were found in all three groups of children. The results showed no correlation between extended breastfeeding and caries in the primary dentition. The authors conclude that early childhood caries may have a number of different causes. Major risk factors include an unhealthy diet and lack of proper oral hygiene.
